Telcos and ISPs currently work to deliver entertainment and communications through their web services, but there is still little work made in the Home Management space. Intamac’s work with leading service providers and extensive market research has demonstrated that there is a real opportunity in the security market to develop a “Home Monitoring” proposition that provides wider capabilities than traditional security systems.

There are actually very few consumers who would say they do not need security. Research from Parks Associates suggest that consumers are attracted by packages that compete directly with traditional security systems, but which offer additional messaging services, have a wider range of sensors (flood alarms, smoke and gas detectors, and temperature sensors), are sold at a lower price point and can be monitored and controlled remotely via a secure website or mobile interface.

The key features required to grow this Home Monitoring market will be:

  • Providing a single user interface through which consumers can manage all aspects of the domestic environment.
  • Offering a portfolio of products and services to meet all their needs.
  • Modular design so that people can pick and mix.
  • Low cost, plug and play solutions.
  • Bundling products and services together.

The drivers for increasing home monitoring and security applications are now also coming from the broadband industry. As competition is increasing, service providers are looking for new value added services that will exploit broadband and help them differentiate, increase ARPU and reduce churn. The majority are well advanced with entertainment and triple-play roll-outs, and are now looking at Home Management as the next big area of development in the Connected Home market.
